8th Avenue NE Crossing
In order to address pedestrian safety and to facilitate an improved bikeway connection across the 45th Street Bridge, a safe crossing of NE 45th Street is needed at 8th Ave NE.
We are requesting a marked crosswalk with a “half signal” at 8th Avenue NE.
Marked crosswalk
Half signal traffic lights with push buttons for pedestrians and bicyclists
New ADA curb ramp on south sidewalk
Connections to new bikeways across 45th Street Bridge
Safety Concern at Intersection
In the last 10 years, there have been 76 reported traffic collisions within a half-block of this intersection.
Connecting east-West Bikeway
This crossing will enable people to bike west from the U District to Wallingford using a future NE 43rd St bikeway and then 45th St Bridge. It will also ensure people can safely access the Floating Bridge Brewery, Blue Moon Tavern, FedEx Office, Petco, and other nearby businesses.
Local Support
During the 2019 Your Voice Your Choice voting, more than 107 people ranked this project as a “high priority” — the second most of any proposed idea in the city. The Floating Bridge Brewery and the organizations Green Lake & Wallingford Safe Streets, Northeast Seattle Greenways, University Greenways, and U District Mobility Coalition support the project.
Funding
We are seeking $150,000 from the 2020 Your Voice Your Choice Program to construct the 8th Ave NE Crossing. Funding for the bikeway across the 45th Street Bridge will be sought in SDOT’s 2021 budget.
